Music Terminology of the Week #16
Every week I will add a word or term commonly used in music. This will teach those who cannot read sheet music something new and we can all share our knowledge.
Hemiola
-metrical pattern in which two bars in simple triple time are articulated as if they were three bars in simple duple time
-from the Greek word hemiolios which means "one and a half"
-the rhythm you feel is 1 2 3, 1 2 3, 1 2, 1 2, 1 2
-three against two feel
-popular during the Renaissance period
