I feel the series was at its best with Order of the Phoenix; after that . . . well, it started to feel like Rowling was overwhelmed with what everyone expected of her. It went from realizing she was one of the few authors who could do it as her day job to realizing that millions of people were waiting to see what happened next, and I think it had a poor impact on the series as a whole. Like she felt she had to make things more epic and dramatic.
